Our History

The Party of Opportunity! The Republican Party is fighting for a freer and stronger America where everyone has the opportunity to achieve the American Dream.

The Grand Old Party has her roots in Jackson, Michigan where on July 6 in 1854, over 1,000 citizens came together to denounce slavery. These men, African Americans and Whites, who were doctors, lawyers, bankers, preachers, farmers, and freed slaves, were inspired by The Republic as defined by Jefferson. Hence, the name “Republicans.” This Republic called for State rights, liberties and God-given personal rights and freedoms. 2 years later, the Grand Old Party became a National Party growing fastest in the Mid-West and Northern states. And within 6 years, every Northern State had a Republican Governor. Abe Lincoln was the first Republican President. The first Black Senator and Congressman were Republicans. The first woman in the House of Representatives was a Republican.

GOGOP’s history parallels that of the National Party as it began here in Lake Orion, MI in a basement with 6 members. Promoting the Republican ideals, freedoms and responsibilities of the individual, the club eventually grew to where it is today at over 200 members. Many of those founding members still remain active in the club. Made up mostly of grassroots ordinary people, we are very concerned with the governance of our communities, county, state and country. GOGOP has been very successful in seeing many of our members elected into offices on all levels. Our primary purpose is to educate the membership on current issues, help the community where we can, and be good conservative active citizens.

As the country grew, so did the Republican platform. But through the many changes to the party, there has been an underlying belief in abiding principles. We are Republicans today because we:

BELIEVE that the strength of our nation lies with the individual and that each person’s dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored.

BELIEVE in equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, sex, age or disability.

BELIEVE free enterprise and encouraging individual initiative have brought this nation opportunity, economic growth and prosperity.

BELIEVE government must practice fiscal responsibility and allow individuals to keep more of the money they earn.

BELIEVE the proper role of government is to provide for the people only those critical functions that cannot be performed by individuals or private organizations, and that the best government is that which governs least.

BELIEVE the most effective, responsible and responsive government is government closest to the people.

BELIEVE Americans must retain the principles that have made us strong while developing new and innovative ideas to meet the challenges of changing times.

BELIEVE Americans value and should preserve our national strength and pride while working to extend peace, freedom and human rights throughout the world.

FINALLY, we believe the Republican Party is the best vehicle for translating these ideals into positive and successful principles of government.
